INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE (1989-1995) [From My Facebook Page]
25 April 2017
Yet another story from my days as a #Branch #Accountant with #Crompton #Greaves. You may not be aware that when I was initially appointed, I was told that the management has extremely high expectations from me. I cannot share exactly what those were, I can explain by way of an example.
The entire staff did not believe that a 28 year old upstart CA could manage the 3rd largest sales branch of the company in India. Here, I am talking about a 30-35 person strong marketing deptt and our own accounting and administrative strength of around 15-20 people. But with the Grace of God, I had set out with an iron will and a heart of steel. I was simply determined that I would win over everybody with sincerity and hard work alone.
First step was that my staff saw my sincerity and sided with me. Next was the marketing, which was tough, as I was handling credit control as well. But my excellent and positive attitude won the respect of many Vice-president and General Manager's of all the divisions.
Then came the greatest challenge that I have ever faced of my life so far. The task ahead was to computerise this mammoth branch handling crores of material despatched to entire Western India, sometimes on behalf of Mumbai, the largest volumetric branch in India. For this a training of UNIX and SQL followed. The design for the branch was centred around me, as I was most computer-literate in the branch then. Sufficient to say that the computerisation was highly successful!!
Cheers!!

When I started out with private practise as a Chartered Accountant in the year 1995, after quitting my last job as a Manager (Accounts) from a Private Limited Company based in Ahmedabad, I thought I'd give it my all and become a top-class #Financial #Consultant.
But first, see these slides that I prepared for a lecture for the students studying post graduation in Forensic Science (Forensic Accounting) at #GFSU (Gujarat Forensic Sciences University), Gandhinagar.
#Follow my #Blog to learn more about what happened to my dream there. GOOD MORNING!!

It was in the year 1992-1993 that I had joined the then Cadila Laboratories Ltd, a deemed Public Limited Company - As Audit Officer in the Internal Audit Department. In those days, it seemed to me later that be that this Department existed only because of a legal requirement. The only reason I stuck around there for a year was my administrative and immediate boss. He was the Factory Controller and GM in charge (Internal Audit) at that time. I learned a lot from him, being my third job after qualifying as a CA. He insisted that I prepare all my Internal Audit documentation and reports using computers, and for that he acquired special permission to have access to a computer for an hour daily. The base for my knowledge in computers began with my initiation to DBase, Wordstar, Lotus-123 and FoxPro. It was also the stage that became set for learning Macro Development and later Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
KNOWLEDGE INCREASES WITH EACH SHARE AND INTERACTION.

During my pre-qualification (as a CA) days, I worked as an Audit Assistant at M/s S. B. Billimoria & Co, Chartered Accountants, New Delhi. This was way back in 1988. During my tenure there, I was allotted the branch audit of Housing Development Corporation (HDFC), Lucknow branch. Prior to that, I was sent to their HO at Delhi to get trained on Loan Documentation for the Housing Loans - I still remember that they deputed their best Credit Appraisal Officer, whose first name was Rajeev. After the 3 weeks training, I knew everything a Credit Appraisal Officer ought to know about proper sanctioning of Housing Term Loans (HTL). That training holds me in good stead till this day. Now that I have cleared my Concurrent Audit Exam conducted by ICAI, it would be great to combine both these expertise and produce some worthwhile reports. Cheers.

I recall my first job after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in the May 1989 Final Examination! It was in Ingersoll-Rand (I) Limited at their Naroda Plant, Ahmedabad as an "Audit Officer (Level III)" from 1st July 1989 - in their Internal Audit Department. In the year that followed, I learnt the ropes of being an Internal Audit Officer so well that very shortly I knew this was not something I could do all my life. However, my boss who also doubled as Factory Controller taught me really well by guiding me about the proper conduct of the functioning of the various departments and what procedures to adopt to become an effective auditor - that it has stood me in very good stead ever since.
Good Evening!!

One particular #interaction with an #engineer from Mumbai just popped up #unbidden in my mind, that I want to #share.
Just soon after I joined #Crompton #Greaves Ltd as Assistant Branch Accountant, our #invoicing software was housed in a #stand-#alone #PC. On that fateful day, I was first to arrive at the #branch with our #Office peon in tow. As was the norm, I went from PC to PC, turning each on in advance, so that my staff would not waste time and could work on arrival.
The invoicing PC was the last to be put on, for I myself was scheduled to observe the computer operator for the full day. As I pushed the power button, I noticed a tiny flash of light in the aperture next to the light indicating Hard Disk activity and then the next thing I knew was that the PC would just not boot. After 3-4 tries, I called up our Regional Office in Mumbai, as per procedure.
After a bit they called back saying an engineer has already boarded the next train to Ahmedabad and that I should use the backup PC to run the invoicing software. Next morning, on arrival, I informed him about the tiny flash and subsequent crash of the PC, in order to assess if it was the flash that caused the failure?
He clearly denied and proceeded to open it's entrails just like an actual operation. By afternoon, he was still unable to find the fault. While he stood tearing his hair in desperation, I entered the scene and innocently asked him "What about that flash I told you about, did you check that part?" - and to my amazement, he thumped his forehead when he found it was a tiny diode that had fused which was causing the problem.
In minutes he replaced it, successfully booted the PC and was on his way back to Mumbai by the next train after thanking me profusely for showing him his amateurish mistake of assuming the most obvious of causes. The #MORAL of this story is "Never assume the most basic of things that can go wrong - start your investigation with exactly the root cause of the error/problem".

Thank you, #Facebook #Administration. For #appreciating the need to change the name of this #page to the most #appropriate "..... 1989 to Present" - for I continue to #grow and #prosper even today - if not in #monetary terms, no matter, in #literary and #cultural matters, no one can match my #progress. So help me, Lord. AMEN.

In the year 1989, as a fresher CA, I joined Ingersoll-Rand (India) Limited at their Naroda Plant, Ahmedabad as an Audit Officer (Level 3) under the leadership of CA Sharad Malwade, Factory Controller-cum-GM (Audit). Then followed a glorious period of learning about International business, as the company's major produce of electric motors was exported to the parent company in USA. Domestic consumption was there too, mostly to big companies in Mumbai, cannot recollect the names.
What was noteworthy was that my concepts of internal control and corporate governance got a strong foundation to build on. Plus I consider myself fortunate that my boss would insist that every document I prepared should be computerized, be it in Lotus 1-2-3, Wordstar or even in dBase or at times even FoxPro. That is what started me off on #Macro #Programming.
Good Morning!!
